How to make better cold brew at home

Updated: Aug 25

Cold Brew

Summer is upon us and we at Al-Gharb Coffee Roasters want to share how you can make our favorite summer drink at home. This is a base recipe for a cold brew concentrate.

Here is what you need:

  • Coffee - ground rather coarse

  • A French Press

  • If possible a Coffee Filter and dripper - like a V60 from Hario

  • A bit of space in the fridge …

  • AAAND some time

I love to use coffees that have a rich flavour of chocolate - like our staple brazil. In order to achieve a smooth cold brew we are using a filter roast - more on the light to medium side.

This coffee needs to be ground coarser than you would use for a filter or french press brew.

We use 100gr of coffee with 800ml of cold water.

Now it gets simple … with the coffee in the french press - add all the water and stir to make sure all the coffee is wet.

Put the lid loosely on and leave the mixture  to extract in the fridge.

We leave it here for around 12 hours. If you are using a fruitier coffee - you might need to shorten this to only a few hours. Depending on the coffee it might get a little too acidic otherwise.

Once the gruelling wait is over - slowly lower the filter in the french press.

You will see that there are a few floaters around now that’s why we recommend to filter the cold brew concentrate through a v60 filter.

You can see in the filter how much cleaner the results are.

Now you have a good portion of cold brew concentrate and can store it in the fridge for around 2 weeks.

For your ideal summer drink you only need to mix about 150ml  of the cold brew concentrate with around 100ml either water, tonic water or any milk - just the way you like it. Don’t forget to add some ice cubes as well.

And … go find your closest beach ….

This is the coffee we use:
