What is Specialty Coffee?
Exceptional Quality | Treated with Care | Traced to the source
Specialty coffee is a term often used to describe high quality and unique coffees. According the Specialty Coffee Association, for coffee to be considered as "specialty coffee", it must score 80 points or above out of 100 in the SCA score.
Farming
Specialty coffee can be traced to farm, they are often grown by small hold farmers or co-operatives and the beans are picked by hand when they are ripe.
Roasting
Each origin is different and therefore need to be roasted to their potential. Specialty Coffee Roasters often produce lighter roasts, so that the beans still retain their original flavour notes, unlike commercial roasting, where dark roasting masks the origin flavours and defects, so it always tastes the same.
Brewing
Specialty coffee shops will also carry on the process of caring for the product. Specialty coffee beans are fresh, and only ground to order. You will never see ground coffee beans sitting around.
Brewing is not an art, it's a science and getting perfection, requires tools and equipment, to ensure consistency. You will often see
Drinking
Specialty coffee should be appreciated and enjoyed, like the fine craft that it is.

Origin Story
Born out of passion and obsession for coffee
Al-Gharb Coffee Roasters opened their doors in 2019.
At the time, specialty coffee was virtually unheard of in the Algarve and so Al-Gharb became the first coffee roastery of its kind in the region.
Al-Gharb faced many challenges in the beginning. Besides surviving the pandemic, there was the simple fact that commercial coffee dominated people's understanding of what coffee is and how to drink it.
Over time, they built a community of specialty coffee lovers, opening up a world of shared passion and enthusiasm for what coffee can do and how diverse and complex it can be.
Al-Gharb is committed to bringing specialty coffee to everyone. It is not coffee snobbery, it is way of life.
