Brazil - Mogiana Alta Coffee Beans
As Specialty coffee Roasters, we see Brazilian coffees all the time. We call them the staple coffees, the bases for our blends, the crowd pleasers. This coffee is different. It defies what we think we know about coffee. It is complex yet clean. It is chocolatey yet fruity. Of all the coffees we've had in Al-Gharb, this is in the top of the top. My recommendation is don't buy it! I want to keep it for myself.
It is a region of the state of São Paulo that encompasses 15 municipalities. The Alta Mogiana region is recognised worldwide for its unique quality in the production of excellent coffees.
There is a record of Alta Mogiana being associated with coffee for over 100 years.
Alta Mogiana is located in the north of the state of São Paulo. A plateau with gentle mountain ranges, with altitudes of 900 to 1000 metres. It is a traditional coffee-growing region, with average monthly temperatures of 21oC in summer and 17oC in winter, with annual rainfall of around 1,623 mm, the rainy season being characterised by the period from October to April.
The climatic characteristics described above are conducive to the slow and uniform ripening of the beans. Selective harvesting is carried out at the optimum point of ripening of the bean, in order to obtain the greatest number of coffee beans. Sun-drying in thin layers, controlled by skilled labour, is provided for in modern mechanical dryers, with a precious temperature control. Among the most cultivated varieties are catuaí, mundo novo, bourbon and obatã.
