Traceability - About the Region

The Nyamasheke region, located in southwestern Rwanda on the shores of Lake Kivu, is recognized as one of the country's leading specialty coffee producing areas. The region benefits from a humid and stable microclimate thanks to its proximity to the lake, ideal conditions for coffee cultivation. Its nutrient-rich volcanic soils, along with an altitude of 1,500 to 2,100 meters above sea level, allow for slower bean growth, enhancing the richness and complexity of the flavors. The predominant species in the region is Arabica, especially the Red Bourbon variety, prized for its distinctive and complex sensory profile.

Kirambo Washing StationThe Kirambo washing station is located in the Nyamasheke district, on a hill sloping down to the shores of Lake Kivu. Built in 2008, it operated intermittently for several years due to a lack of funding, being leased to various operators, which made it difficult for local coffee farmers to have a consistent partner.

In 2017, Rwanda Trading Company (RTC) acquired the station and began continuous operation starting with the 2018 harvest, producing high-scoring washed and natural coffees thanks to the quality of the Red Bourbon cherries and the hard work and commitment of the producers.
